Fringe Signal

Privacy policy

Effective

Fringe Signal is operated by Keegan Gaffney, a sole proprietor in the United States (“we,” “us”). We are the data controller for processing for which we determine the purposes and means. Contact contact@keegangaffney.com with privacy questions or requests.

This policy covers the iPhone and iPad app, its companion Shortcut, and related support. Separate marketing-website cookies, analytics, and forms are outside its scope.

1Your maps and measurements

Your floor plans, the spatial data used to create and revisit them, and your Wi-Fi measurements are processed and stored on your device. Measurements include connected-network details, signal readings, and their positions on your maps. The companion Shortcut passes network readings to the app on the same device. We do not receive this content through analytics or crash reporting.

iCloud sync starts automatically on first use when iCloud is available. Saved spaces and their associated data sync through your private Apple iCloud account so they are available on your other devices. Unfinished drafts stay on the device. You can turn sync off in Settings; this does not erase existing copies. Device backups are managed separately through your Apple settings.

You can also choose to share maps by exporting an image or PDF, or sending an attachment to support. Those copies go to the destination you select. Internet speed tests are described separately below.

Camera access supports scanning and tracking your measurement walk. Photos access is requested when needed to save an image. The app does not request GPS coordinates or maintain a GPS location history. You can manage device permissions in iOS Settings.

2Analytics and diagnostics

App usage analytics and crash/performance reporting are enabled by default. We use them to understand which features work, improve the app, and diagnose problems.

This stops app analytics capture/uploads and closes crash reporting. It does not delete reports already received. Previously queued data may be sent if you enable reporting again. This switch does not disable RevenueCat’s subscription services described below. Saved maps and iCloud sync have separate controls.

We use these providers:

PostHog
Receives setup, feature-use, and purchase-outcome events to help us improve the app. These include counts, timings, outcomes, subscription plan/offer information, random installation/session identifiers, and app, operating-system, and device information. Privacy notice
Sentry
Receives crash, error, and sampled performance reports to help us diagnose problems. These include an installation identifier, app and device information, stack traces, timings, app activity, and network request addresses. Privacy notice

We do not send saved-space names, floor plans, camera references, Wi-Fi network identifiers, or individual Wi-Fi readings to these services. PostHog does not receive internet speed-test results. We do not enable session replay or attach screenshots or camera footage to diagnostic reports.

Random identifiers associate activity with an app installation without attaching your name or email address. Providers receive your IP address when the app connects; our PostHog and Sentry projects are configured to prevent IP addresses from being stored in new analytics and diagnostic events.

We do not sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, or track users across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising.

3Connection tests and subscriptions

Internet speed tests

When you start a test, the app exchanges generated test traffic with Cloudflare, which receives your IP address and technical request information. Uploads contain test data, not your saved maps or documents. A test can use approximately 275 MB of data. Results stay in memory for the app session; Wi-Fi readings are stored separately as described above.

Cloudflare’s privacy policy explains its handling of service data. Its Speed Test notice also describes sharing anonymized measurement information with measurement partners. You can use other available app features without running an internet test.

Subscriptions

Apple handles billing. We use RevenueCat to display subscription offers and manage purchase verification and access. RevenueCat connects when the app starts, including before a purchase and when app analytics is off.

RevenueCat processes a generated app user identifier, Fringe Signal purchase and subscription records, app and device information, recent app-use times, and IP address/country information. We do not send it your name, email address, maps, or measurements. Neither we nor RevenueCat receive your payment-card details. See Apple’s privacy policy and RevenueCat’s privacy information.

4Support and beta versions

When you email us, we and the service hosting our mailbox receive your email address, message, and any attachments you choose to send. We use these to respond and investigate your request. Saved maps are not automatically attached.

For TestFlight versions, Apple may provide tester details, usage information, crash logs, and feedback or attachments you submit. This is separate from the app’s reporting switch. See TestFlight & Privacy.

5Purposes, sharing, and international processing

Where GDPR or UK GDPR applies, our legal bases are:

Contract
Information necessary to provide the app features you use, subscription access, and related service support.
Legitimate interests
Responding to general inquiries, managing beta feedback, protecting the service and legal rights, and improving app usability and reliability through limited analytics and diagnostics, subject to your rights and applicable law.
Legal obligations
Handling privacy requests and complying with applicable legal duties.

Providing data is not a statutory requirement for using the app. Some information or device access is needed for the feature you request. We do not make solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects; subscription access is checked automatically against Apple’s purchase information.

Information goes to the providers described above and destinations you choose. Providers acting on our behalf must protect it under applicable processing agreements; we remain responsible for that processing. Their linked notices provide additional information. Apple and Cloudflare also operate their own services under their privacy notices. We may disclose information where necessary to meet a lawful requirement, protect legal rights, or obtain confidential professional advice.

We operate in the United States, including accessing service dashboards and support messages. PostHog analytics and Sentry crash reports are hosted in the EU; RevenueCat processes subscription-service data in the United States. Our email host stores mailbox data in Switzerland, Germany, or Norway. Providers may also process information in other countries. RevenueCat’s Data Processing Addendum, incorporated into its standard service terms, includes the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, with UK and Swiss provisions where applicable. Contact us for information or available copies of applicable safeguards.

6Retention and deletion

Deleting a space is permanent. It removes the space’s floor plans, measurements, saved history, drafts, and associated spatial data from the app on that device. Deleted spaces cannot be recovered in the app. Data also used by another saved space or draft remains with that copy.

For spaces synced with iCloud, deletion also removes their synced content from your private iCloud storage and other devices as sync completes. This is not immediate: devices must reconnect and sync with the relevant Apple Account. If sync is off or interrupted, removal waits until sync resumes. A minimal deletion record containing the space’s identifier is retained on-device and in iCloud to prevent old copies from returning; it contains no floor plans or measurements.

Drafts remain until recovered or discarded. The latest Shortcut reading is replaced by a later accepted reading. Exported copies and device backups are managed separately.

Turning off sync, signing out, or deleting the app does not by itself erase all cloud, backup, or exported copies. Turning off reporting does not erase previously uploaded events.

Deleting a space or the app does not delete subscription records held by RevenueCat or Apple. Contact us to request deletion of subscription data we control. Cancel subscriptions separately through your Apple Account; a data-deletion request does not cancel billing.

For information held by us or our service providers:

Analytics
Our current PostHog plan provides seven years of event history. This is an availability window, not a guaranteed deletion deadline. We currently rely on provider retention and deletion processes rather than applying our own scheduled purge.
Diagnostics
Individual Sentry error and performance events are retained for 30 days under our current plan. Issue summaries may remain after individual events expire, and backup copies can persist until their separate expiry.
Subscriptions
We retain RevenueCat records to verify and restore purchase access and handle subscription support and disputes. We have not set a separate automatic deletion schedule for inactive customer records. You can request deletion as described below.
Support and beta feedback
We delete copies of messages, attachments, and feedback that we retain within 12 months after the request or issue is resolved. Apple’s independently held TestFlight records are governed by its own notice.

Records needed for a specific legal duty or claim may be retained for that purpose for the applicable period. Apple and Cloudflare describe retention for processing they independently control in their own notices.

7Your rights and choices

Depending on applicable law, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, or a portable copy of your personal information, and object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw it without affecting earlier lawful processing. These rights have conditions and exceptions.

Email contact@keegangaffney.com. We request only information reasonably needed to verify and locate records. An email address alone may not identify installation-based telemetry or RevenueCat subscription records. We do not require an account or collect additional identity information solely for compliance. If we cannot identify your records, we explain the limitation and consider additional information you provide that enables us to locate them.

For EU GDPR requests, we respond without undue delay and ordinarily within one month. A legally permitted extension of up to two further months is explained within the first month. Other applicable deadlines are respected. We explain any refusal and available complaint or appeal route. Where applicable, US state rights include authorized-agent requests and appeals. We do not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights.

You can complain directly to the EEA authority where you live, work, or believe an infringement occurred, or to the UK ICO, as applicable.

8Security, children, and updates

We use reasonable security measures, including secure network connections and access controls. No system is completely secure; your device and Apple Account security and sharing decisions also matter.

Fringe Signal is a general-purpose utility, not designed for or marketed to children. Contact us if a child has provided personal information without legally required permission so we can investigate and take appropriate action.

We update the effective date when this policy changes and provide appropriate notice of material changes. Contact contact@keegangaffney.com with questions.
